It’s expensive to live or own property in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, yet it is one very amazing opportunity to be immersed in the architectural history of New York City. Quality structures erected in the mid-1920s are referred to as prewar buildings and often feature high ceilings, hardwood floors, fireplaces and impressive millwork.

One family which purchased one of these charming residences found the herringbone-patterned, hardwood floors to be nicked and scratched from decades of use, obviously with minimal maintenance.

They were not positive the floors could be renovated because some of the gouges were so deep. Not to be deterred, however, several flooring specialists were contacted. One was a no-show; another offered a quote via zoom; and yet another said the floors needed replacement. Then, enter Tully Spagnolia & Sons with their four generations of flooring experience, full-time office assistant, respectful and responsive owner and a plan. They could do this. Refinishing and repairing a solid hardwood floor with a herringbone pattern is both an art and a precision-driven process that can breathe new life into prewar homes in the Big Apple.

When the proposal was accepted, the building super abruptly added an extra umbrella insurance policy. The Spagnoli team responded quickly and efficiently to meet the unexpected requirement, and the start date was not delayed. David was a joy to work with, and the technical team worked painstakingly on every task in the project. First, they removed cracked wood boards which needed replacing, meticulously measuring (twice, of course!), cutting (once, of course!) and fitting each new one. Woody does the wood work; no joke on the nickname. His real name is Woodrow, and he can cut and piece precisely what is needed for any parquet or patterned hardwood floor repair. The Spagnoli staff was professional, skilled, talented and laser-focused from start to finish — from severely damaged, old, hardwood herringbone floors to spectacular, striking, fully restored, hardwood herringbone floors, befitting the glitz and glamour of yesteryear and present day Upper West Side of Manhattan.
