If you’re under 12, Dumbo might bring up the image of a sweet little gray elephant with blue eyes and oversized ears. If you have lived in the Big Apple for any length of time, you probably know that Dumbo here is the neighborhood Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. You may also know it is wildly beloved for the East River waterfront, impressive architecture and the soaring Manhattan bridge.
Residents savor the art and foodie scenes, along with trendy boutiques and cobblestone streets. They love being outside, and for some that means outdoors at home – if you can find your way up over the threshold from your indoor floor to the outdoor patio. Sounds odd, right? Well, it was strange that no step had been installed, until this owner contacted us with a vision for an easier and safer egress and ingress.
Our woodworking team studied the obstacle and measured in every direction. They expertly put pencil to paper, tweaked this and that, then measured again – you always want to measure twice and cut once. Then our Spagnoli team of highly experienced wood craftsmen constructed two steps with risers and rounded front edges the entire length of three exterior doorways, more than eight feet long or wide. The result melds perfectly with the interior and makes a much safer option for the residents to step up and out and back in and down. In the end, it looks like it’s always been in place, but we know who crafted this custom project from beginning to end at the suggestion of one smart homeowner.
