Expert Maintenance

School, Church & Auditorium Flooring Contractor in Brooklyn & Queens

Four generations of Brooklyn hardwood craftsmanship, now restoring basketball courts and gymnasium floors for NYC schools, churches, and athletic facilities.

Sanded, sealed, and back in play on your schedule, not ours.

Gym Floor Services, Start to Finish

Whether the finish is dull and scuffed or the floor needs a full sand-down, we scope the right level of work, not the most expensive one.

  • Sanding & Refinishing: A full strip-down to bare wood for courts with deep scratches, dead spots, or a finish that’s worn through. Followed by staining (if needed) and multiple coats of a gym-rated finish built for athletic traffic.

  • Yearly Screening & Recoating: A lighter, faster maintenance recoat for floors that are structurally sound but looking dull or scuffed. It’s the more affordable option between full refinishes, and often all a floor needs.

  • Dust-Contained Sanding: Contained equipment keeps sanding dust out of hallways and HVAC systems, so the job can run inside an occupied building without shutting down the rest of the school.

  • Game Lines & Logo Repainting: Court lines, team logos, school/organization names and center-court graphics repainted to spec as part of the refinish, so the floor comes back exactly how your program needs it.

Step-by-Step Flooring Process

We follow a meticulous step-by-step process to ensure the work is as seamless as possible.

Refinish vs. Screen and Recoat: Which One Does Your Floor Actually Need?

This is the most common question we get from facility managers.

Screening & Recoating is the right call if:

  • The finish looks dull, cloudy, or scuffed, but the wood underneath is solid
  • No bare wood is showing through, even under the hoops or at center court
  • It’s been roughly 12–18 months since the last service
  • Game lines and logos are still in good shape
  • You want the faster, lower-cost maintenance option

Sanding & Refinishing is the right call if:

  • The finish has worn through to bare wood in high-traffic spots
  • There are deep scratches, gouges, or “dead spots” where the finish has failed
  • You’re seeing discoloration, water staining, or raised grain
  • It’s been 5+ years since the last full refinish
  • Lines or logos need to be repainted anyway

Most school and athletic gym floors need a full sanding and refinishing every 3 to 5 years.

Keeping up with a screen-and-recoat every 12 to 18 months extends the life of the floor without needing a full refinish.

Screening & Recoating

Lightly abrades just the top layer of finish and seals it with a fresh coat. It is faster, less disruptive, and the right call if the wood itself isn't gouged or worn through.

Refinishing

Sands the floor down to bare wood. Needed once the finish has worn through or the surface has deep scratches or dead spots. Once sanded to raw wood, lines and logos are repainted before the finish coats go on.

A standard gym floor typically takes about 1–2 weeks from sanding through a fully cured finish.

The exact timeline depends on the floor's size, current condition, and the number of coats needed.

Yes! We repaint court lines, team logos, and center-court graphics to your specifications as part of the refinishing process.

Why Schools and Facility Managers Call Spagnoli

We’ve refinished hardwood floors across Brooklyn and Queens for four generations. A basketball court gets the same standard of sanding and finish work as any residential job we take on, plus something many larger flooring outfits don’t offer: an owner who understands that a school gym has to be worked on during breaks, on tight deadlines.

We’re not a national franchise dispatching whoever’s available. When you call, you’re talking to the people doing the work, and we build the schedule around your calendar: school breaks, holiday weekends, or after hours.
